One of the objectives of the Board of Management of Messe Berlin when it began its overhaul of the company in 1999 was to enable internet, e-business and e-commerce activities to acquire a significance that had not previously been experienced in the trade fair sector.

As part of this process some new milestones were defined: previously unrecognised and unexploited areas of business and business models were explored, along with new types of trade fairs, developments on the grounds and the opportunities offered by the privatisation of the company. Messe Berlin thus entered a new era.
