Digital Broadcasting – TV, IPTV + Audio
Interactive and personalized add-on information in IPTV
Fraunhofer FOKUS, Media Interoperability LabStand 02
Following the resounding success of the FOKUS Media Interoperability Lab – a reference environment for future IPTV & media services launched at IFA 2007 – this year the Fraunhofer Institute FOKUS presents brand-new developments from the Lab. Integration of interactive content, personalized advertising and context-dependent add on information are just a few of the many highlights. Another special feature targets communication between a variety of disparate end devices to enable a group of geographically remote media prosumers to share in a common media experience.

DAB Surround – 5.1 Surround Sound for Digital Radio
Fraunhofer IISStand 15
ANTENNE BAYERN and ROCK ANTENNE are the worldwide first radio stations to broadcast a DAB Surround signal. Together with Fraunhofer IIS, ANTENNE BAYERN and ROCK ANTENNE present at IFA this stunning new radio experience. DAB Surround® brings the concert hall into your living room: Radio listening becomes an immersive experience literally surrounding the listener with a live concert atmosphere. This is even possible for programs which so far do not broadcast 5.1 content or want to mix stereo and 5.1 material. SX Pro® by Fraunhofer IIS analyzes and processes the stereo audio signal to harmonically integrate it into a 5.1 transmission.

IT-based Encoder System for Compact DVB-H Playout
Fraunhofer HHIStand 17
Mobile TV operators use state-of-the-art encoding technologies - DVB-H with H.264 video, HE AAC audio and statistical multiplex - reducing transmission bandwidth and cost. Further cost savings now become possible by minimizing the amount of hardware in a DVB-H playout system. The Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications, Heinrich-Hertz-Institut has developed encoders, utilizing latest IT technologies (multi-core processors), providing up to eight services running on a single machine. IP-based input of MPEG-2 encoded streams is the key for feeding multiple programs onto a single machine making costly grabber hardware obsolete. At IFA 2008 a compact encoder system with M+N redundancy and seamless IP based switching for failover is demonstrated.

Meeting the Requirements for Modern Video Delivery
Fraunhofer HHIStand 17
The most recent and highly efficient video coding standard H.264/AVC has been extended by scalability tools, developed mainly at Fraunhofer HHI. This so-called Scalable Video Coding (SVC) extension allows for decoding the same video content at variable resolutions, frame rates or image fidelity, just by extracting parts of a scalable bit stream, without any need for transcoding. As will be demonstrated, application areas of SVC include simultaneous transmission of multiple HD formats (720p/1080p) as well as Mobile TV at QVGA and VGA resolution.

Broadcast Mobile TV in DVB-SH – Improved Video Quality with MPE-iFEC
Alcatel-LucentStand 22
MPE-iFEC (Multiprotocol Encapsulation – inter-burst Forward Error Correction) is a powerful error-correction coding that improves the quality of broadcast mobile TV reception in hybrid satellite and terrestrial networks. This innovative feature is embedded in the DVB-SH mobile broadcast standard (Digital Video Broadcast – Satellite services to Handhelds). In a satellite context. MPE-iFEC is an alternative to the long physical interleaver standard option for small receivers. In a terrestrial context, MPE-iFEC significantly enhances the error-correction performances.
