Light Contest

A competition for the best ideas — lighting to suit every situation

Under the heading of “Lighting Solutions for every Generation’s Needs“, belektro 2008 marks the first occasion that Messe Berlin and the fair’s non-commercial sponsor, the publication LICHT, are inviting students of Lighting Design, Product Design, Lighting Systems, Architecture and Interior Architecture to take part in a competition for the best ideas.

More than 50 students of Product and Lighting Design from Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee, FH Potsdam and Hochschule Wismar have registered to take part. Under the supervision of their professors during the summer semester they worked on innovative concepts under the heading of “Lighting Solutions for every Generation’s Needs“.

A jury of high-ranking members judged the designs according to the following criteria: innovativeness, originality, aesthetics, sustainability and feasibility. The prize-giving ceremony took place during the opening of belektro on 14 October 2008.

For his model “Switch 2.1” Stefan Schmechel (Fachhochschule Potsdam) received the first prize.

The second prize went to Michael Grosch and Joonas Saaranen (Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee). Together they designed the model „CUPLA“.

The third prize has been awarded to Thomas Schmitz (Fachhochschule Potsdam) for his model “zeig dich!”.

The models of the prize-winning designs and other selected designs has been on view in a special display area of the LICHT-DIALOG at belektro.
