Project: Dizzy Heights for new Insights Artist: Jeroen Jacobs Courtesy: magnus mueller, Berlin
Jeroen Jacobs works with spatial details which are mainly drawn from a domestic realm and in turn are staged sculpturally in the exhibition context with the borders between inside and outside blurred. By manually rebuilding and thus isolating objects and structures such as roofs, garage doors, airplane wings and complete or fragmented architectural forms, Jacobs maintains a critical distance from these motifs while simultaneously affording a striking intimacy with what would otherwise be our unremarkable surroundings.
He chooses strong imagery which is rooted in collective memory and has a radiation of the all-embracing. It evokes remembrances while at the same time leaving room for fantasies. Through the reduced, encompassing new setting, the objects become compositional elements, while their formal simplicity is aestheticized. At times Jacobs’ intervention in existing rooms is drastic even though his installations are done with simple material in an easy hand and therefore possess a certain fragility. Therefore not only the displayed but mainly the experienceable context of the work becomes the starting point for a spatial experience.
For the Press Lounge of ARTFORUM BERLIN, Jeroen Jacobs has appropriated and manually recreated a typically inconspicuous, purely utilitarian flat-roof constructed a new flat on the floor and bends it upwards in unexpected places. The architectural intervention does not only transform space, but also the horizon of the viewer. The hand-crafted simulation is complete with the odors of rough tar-paper, and even though there is no danger of falling off the hand-crafted simulation, the situation is none-the-less destabilizing. By bringing this unfamiliar plateau down underfoot, Jacobs subtly heightens the individual’s experience with the structure itself. |

Artists: Slawomir Elsner with Clemens von Wedemeyer coutresy: Slawomir Elsner: Kunstfabrik am Flutgraben, Johnen, Berlin Clemens von Wedemeyer: Jocelyn Wolff, Paris
A red ribbon made out of carpet splits will lead the visitors of the ART FORUM BERLIN to the podium of the Talk Lounge. The podium is bounded by a red heavy theatre-carpet which is contrasted by the green of a wall-coating ostensibly done in former times and covers the bottom edge of the shining white latex-coating at the side wall. Slawomir Elsner produced a stage of words. Private and public. The production of the theatre of the talks as a tentative stage is to become cosy in a private and homelike atmosphere. To become homey in the word of published thoughts. Next to the podium stands a video-box on standard grey carpet leftovers. Inside this video-box, Clemens von Wedemeyer´s movie “Die Siedlung” ( “The Settlement”) is running in a 20-minute loop. The Leipzig suburb Grünau instances what is left after the events of the passed decades of East- and Westeuropean history: complex efforts of privatizating settlements of human beings on accrued empty landscapes. Slawomir Elsner and Clemens von Wedemeyer visualize the Talk Lounge as a fragmented und provisional place of actual reflections
Clemens von Wedemeyer will be awarded with the GASAG Art Prize 2005, Slawomir Elsner and Pauline Kraneis will be awarded with the
GASAG Support Prize 2005 each. The presentation of prizes will take place at the ART FORUM BERLIN at Sept. 29, 2005, 7:30 p.m. in the Talk Lounge. |

Project: Revolution Requirement Artist: Marcel Buehler Courtesy: Echolot, Berlin
It is common that demand satifies needs. Marcel Bühler already offers in other works fitting Tools & Toys: a baseball bat in "without title (kill your idols)", rhinestone boxing gloves in "Killing me softly", a gun in “Portrait of the artist as a dead clown”, a camera in “15 minutes of fame – The aging of the collector".
You arouse needs, you supply needs. Although you only get 186 hits if you google for Bühlers title; so here we still have a call for action – to bring in one of the so often used “Zero-words” which, like the top-trio 3 “Revolution”, “Culture” and “Need” lead all variations and arguments into a waste of energy. Wether revolution - culture, culture - revolution, need-culture, culture-need or just the demand for a need-revolution – it works and everything exists. Bühler attracts attention with johnarmlederic and sylviefleuric glamour, while the sign-typography of “M99” (active since 1985), the so called “ Shop for Revolution-Needs” in the Manteuffelstraße in Kreuzberg, is by far more conformable (in punk-black letters on yellow background), but nevertheless likewise conformable for the target group. Twinkling and flashing but not an antique invitation of the art-lover to get self knowledge; Bühler´s “Blink blink” – Entrance Slogan – pimp up your slogans – does not reflect, but delegates the attention towards the advertised und the attracted on the display. “Whatever it is, I´m against it”, Groucho Marx sings in the movie “Horse Feathers” (1932) – Bühler´s work would be likewise timeless in black and white, an everlasting, always valid and convenient motto.
Or, to speak with Oscar Wild: „Give me luxury, I can resign the necessary”. |

Project: Revolucion-Patriotismo Artist: Costa Vece
Costa Vece is working on a project called REVOLUCION - PATRIOTISMO. The title comes from two main roads in Mexico City. The project REVOLUCION - PATRIOTISMO has been shown already in different countries, always in individual context specific manifestations. The tour started in Geneva, then went to Torino, to Rome and to a group show in Berlin. Ideally the project shall become a worldwide movement. For Art Forum Berlin Vece has continued this work. On the walls in the passage to hall 17 undulate metallic plates have been installed with halogen spots and barbed wire. The undulate metallic plates are painted with political and revolutionary catch phrases. In the centre of the space, a small camouflage camp was built. Each station of the project included all kinds of flags, mostly national flags which were made entirely of clothes, like underpants, t-shirts, socks, pants, skirts and shirts. All this material is only tied together with safety pins. For the room at Art Forum Berlin Vece made-up a German flag as part of the installation. REVOLUCION — PATRIOTISMO refers to the limited rights and possibilities of minorities and legal or illegal aliens, the issue of citizenship of versus tolerated residency in a given nation and the problems of access to and participation in the public life of a nation in all its aspects. REVOLUCION — PATRIOTISMO also shows that sometimes people may chose to fight and revolt against their situation instead of quietly accepting the status they were granted. |

Project: Refrain Artist: Lisa Junghanss media: wall painting, acrylic on cardboard Courtesy: Rekord, Berlin Echolot, Berlin
Lisa Junghanss’ typogragraphical installations are a wild accumulation of associative text fragments. The single text passages seem randomly stringed together. At first, no real story, no overriding theme seems to join the words and sentences. But still, in the end, an individual insight becomes apparent to the viewer.
In Lisa Junghanss’ work, the beholders longing for understanding is not satisfied. Quite on the contrary, he is always thrown back on himself, abandoned with his own associations. This often leads to discontent and uncertainty. But it is exactly there that the artist wants to lead the viewer. Her works offer no answers. They question directly. |

Project: Personal Transportation System Artist: Roland Boden
A new dimension in safe and comfortable travel!
Personal Transportation System realizes a radical change in the system of mass tourism and guarantees a higher status of safety and comfort through using the point-to-point transport cabins. The passenger enters the transport cabin PSU 01 on his home place and leaves it only after reaching the destination. There is no possibility to leave the cabin during the travel process. In this way both the strenuous changes during the travel and, as well as the dangers through fellow passengers, hijacking and other troubles have been dropped. All necessary information are stored on a travel chip card which can be bought before travelling. This card is needed for entering the cabin. The optimal travel route will be calculated automatically and the voyage begins.
The functional and tasteful interior serves all needs of the distinguished passenger. Sanitation, catering boxes, video entertainment with updated travel information and an emergency system secure a comfortable stay. |

And if this is still too picturesque, then you can access the internet, listen to music, watch films or play games on the new portable PSP by Sony Computer Entertainment.
We look forward to seeing you in the lounge of Monopol –Magazine for Art and Living |
