Christine König Galerie was founded in 1989/90. With Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna Secession, and Wien Museum, the location of the gallery has become the most important area of contemporary art in Vienna. The gallery platforms artists whose work responds to the complexities of contemporary society and culture: Pierre Bismuth, Jimmie Durham, Leon Golub, David Hammons, Gerhard Rühm, Ann-Sofi Sidén, and Nancy Spero. Along with them a younger generation of artists who are linked to this older generation have been introduced to the public: Adel Abdessemed, Anetta Mona Chisa & Lucia Tkácová, G.R.A.M., Cameron Jamie, Johanna Kandl, Constantin Luser, Dan and Lia Perjovschi, and Sislej Xhafa. For most of the exhibitions, works, and projects are created specifically. In this way a frame of reference develops that encourages to redefine the character of the gallery in view of a society that is getting ever more on the move.
